Review: It is well said that Geology/Geosciences can’t learn merely in the classrooms. To understand the subject of nature like Geology, it is necessary to go to field and observe the earth material in its natural adobe. Very much literature is not available on the geological field work therefore “A guide to field Geology” by Dr. N.W. Gokhle is much needed efforts to fill this literature gap.

The book begins with the forward written by renowned Geologist D.A. Bhagwatwar, Retired Joint Director, Directorate of Geology and Mining, Govt. of Maharashtra, Nagpur mentioned that “Field Geology is very important branch of Geology and in my opinion there was a long felt need to have one such book on Field Geology.”

The forward is followed by Preface by author himself where he says that “Treasure and mysteries of the earth are buried in the rocks. Recognizing the varieties of rocks and their distribution in the continental parts of the crust of the Earth, constitute the prime objective assignments for the geologists.” He mentioned that this book is an attempt to enlighten the budding geoscientists about the essential aspects of field Geology. The author also expressed his gratitude to all contributors.

As mentioned in the preface of the book, it consists of 9 chapters incorporating 33 figures and 15 photographs.

The 1st to 3rd chapters are describing the theoretical revision on essential knowledge including importance and role of field studies, components of field studies and various important components of geological map.

The Chapter No. 4th to 6th emphasizes on the procedure and various methods of geological mapping in the Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic terrains. The identification of various rock types and different geological structure has been explained in very simple manner with suitable diagrams and lucid language.

In the chapter no. 7th it has been described about the various types of data collection for geological mapping during the fieldwork. This chapter also emphasizes on the procedure of sample collection in the different terrains along with collection of data on petrography and structural information.

Chapter no. 8 and 9 are dedicated to field indicators inferred from geomorphology, external appearance of rocks, structures and mineral composition along with various symbols used for geological map preparation. The book ends with list of references cited.

Thus as per my observation and experience, this is a handy book containing 9 chapters in approximately 100 pages with suitable diagrams, figures, tables and field photographs. The free hand sketches are really good for understanding the concept even to laymen person without much geological knowledge.

I appreciate the painstaking efforts of Dr. N.W. Gokhle ji and extend my best wishes for the success to this book.

The views expressed regarding the review of this book are personal opinions of reviewer based on his own observations and experiences.
